The general procedure for the synthesis of N-hydroxy-5-methoxy-2-pyridine carboxamides from 5-methoxypicolinonitrile is as follows: using the standard method for the synthesis of kainamidoxime, an ethanol (4 mL) solution of 2-cyano-5-methoxypyridine (270 mg, 2.01 mmol), hydroxylamine hydrochloride (0.457 mL, 5 M, 2.28 mmol), and sodium hydroxide (0.230 mL, 10 N, 2.30 mmol) were mixed and heated to reflux for 24 hours. After standard post-treatment, 79 mg of 5-methoxypyridin-2-ylamidoxime was obtained in 24% yield.
