Sodium 1H-benzotriazole can adsorb onto metal surfaces to form a thin film, protecting copper, brass, bronze, and other metals from corrosion by the atmosphere and harmful media. Adding trace amounts of BTA-S to cold water can prevent the migration of copper ions, which can catalyze the corrosion of metals such as aluminum and iron. In heat transfer media, copper ions can cause microporous corrosion in aluminum. Adding sodium 1H-benzotriazole to circulating water can prevent the catalytic oxidation of ethylene glycol by copper ions.
