2-DIMETHYLAMINO-2-METHYL-1-PROPANOL

2-Dimethylamino-2-methyl-1-propanol (abbreviated as DMAMP, CAS No. 7005-47-2, molecular formula C₆H₁₅NO) is a colorless, viscous, oily liquid with an ammonia odor and is hygroscopic. It is miscible with water and most polar solvents. The density of this compound is approximately 0.95 g/mL, and its boiling point is around 158-160°C at normal pressure. Its molecular structure contains both a tertiary amino group and a primary alcohol hydroxyl group, with an XlogP value of 0.2, exhibiting both hydrophilic and lipophilic properties. It is mainly prepared by the Eschweiler–Clarke methylation reaction of 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol with formaldehyde and formic acid. In industrial applications, DMAMP has a wide range of uses. It can be used as an efficient resin solvent and emulsifier in water-based coatings and adhesives to enhance stability, serve as a basic catalyst in the production of polyurethanes and epoxy resins, act as an intermediate in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals and pesticides, and function as a vapor-phase corrosion inhibitor in metalworking fluids. It should be noted that this chemical is corrosive and flammable, and contact may cause severe skin burns and eye damage. Strict safety regulations should be followed during use and storage, and it should be kept away from fire sources.
