3-Methyl-2-cyclopenten-1-one is a pale yellow to yellowish-brown transparent liquid with a sweet, caramel-like aroma. It is used as a flavoring agent and a pharmaceutical intermediate, capable of synthesizing various medicinal substances, including trichothecenes and adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH). 3-Methyl-2-cyclopenten-1-one also serves as a precursor for various substituted cyclopentadienes. These substituted cyclopentadienes can react with various metals to form metallocene complexes, which are important catalysts for olefin polymerization.

Uses: 3-Methyl-2-cyclopenten-1-one can also be applied as a gasoline additive in the petrochemical industry. For example, its hydrogenation product, methylcyclopentane, possesses high octane number and energy density, making it a good alternative to ethanol-blended gasoline.
