**Buserelin: Definition, Functions, and Applications**  

**Definition:**  

Buserelin is a synthetic decapeptide and a potent agonist of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH). It is widely used in medical treatments and research due to its ability to regulate hormonal activity.  

**Functions:**  

Buserelin initially stimulates the release of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), leading to a temporary increase in sex hormone production. With prolonged use, it downregulates GnRH receptors, resulting in suppressed hormonal secretion.  

**Applications:**  

1. **Medical Use:** Buserelin is primarily used to treat hormone-dependent conditions such as prostate cancer, breast cancer, endometriosis, and uterine fibroids.  

2. **Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART):** It is used in controlled ovarian stimulation protocols for in vitro fertilization (IVF) and other fertility treatments.  

3. **Veterinary Use:** Buserelin is also applied in veterinary medicine to regulate reproductive functions in animals.
