Formula: C18H38O.C16H34O
Molecular Weight: 512.941
Melting Point: 51 - 53°C
Solubility: Practically insoluble in water, soluble in ethanol (96 per cent) and in light petroleum. When melted, it is miscible with fatty oils, with liquid paraffin and with melted wool fat.
Appearance: white flake
Application: Lubricants; Emulsifier; Thickener. This product can be used in cosmetics and topical preparations. In topical formulations, octadecanol increases the viscosity of w/o and o/w emulsions. It can stabilize the emulsion and have a co emulsifying effect, thus reducing the amount of surface active Chemicalbook agent required to form a stable emulsion. Octadecyl alcohol is also used to prepare non-aqueous creams and lipstick. According to reports, octadecyl alcohol can be used to reduce the release of water-soluble drugs. When combined with surfactants, it can form emulsions with complex microstructures, including liquid crystals, plate structures and gel phases.
