Citralic anhydride, also known as 2-methylmaleic anhydride, is generally obtained by the dehydration of itaconic acid in the presence of a catalyst, accompanied by an intramolecular double bond isomerization. This compound has various applications in biochemistry, medicine, and electrochemistry. Citralic anhydride can be used as a multifunctional reagent; it is capable of being used in the synthesis of maleimides, bicyclic pyrrolidines, as well as copolymers and trimers, and it can also be employed to protect N-terminal amino acids.
