What is Coumarin?
Coumarin is a natural compound known for its aromatic and fragrant characteristics, making it highly popular in the plant world. It has a sweet, recognizable scent often compared to new-mown hay, with creamy vanilla bean undertones and nut-like notes that are rich but not overpowering or sharp.
This compound is found in various plant sources, including vegetables, fruits, spices, and medicinal plants. It occurs in all parts of the plant—fruits, roots, stems, and leaves—although the highest concentrations are typically found in certain plant parts. For instance, coumarins are abundant in the fruits of plants like Bael (Aegle marmelos), Tetrapleura tetraptera (Mimosaceae), bilberry, and cloudberry. They are also found in seeds such as those of tonka beans (Calophyllum cerasiferum and Calophyllum inophyllum), followed by roots like those of Ferulago campestris, and leaves of plants like Murraya paniculata and Phellodendron amurense var. wilsonii. Additionally, coumarins are present in the latex of the tropical tree Calophyllum teysmannii var. inophylloide and in foods such as chicory and green tea.
Coumarins are also found in high levels in several essential oils, including cassia oil, cinnamon bark oil, and lavender oil. Environmental factors and seasonal changes can influence the levels of coumarins in different parts of plants.

Beyond perfumes, coumarin has been used as a fragrance substance in a variety of cosmetic preparations, including shower gels, shampoos, toothpaste, toilet soaps, intimate soaps, shaving foams, body creams, face creams, hand creams, deodorants, sunscreens, aftershaves, and lipsticks. It is also added to tobacco products to improve taste and aroma, enhancing their appeal.
