Ertapenem
Definition
Ertapenem is a broad-spectrum, carbapenem antibiotic used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. It works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis and is effective against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.
Function
· Disrupts bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to bacterial cell death.
· Offers extended activity against a wide range of pathogens, including those resistant to other antibiotics.
Applications
· Pharmaceuticals: Primarily used to treat infections such as pneumonia, intra-abdominal infections, skin infections, and urinary tract infections.
· Hospital Use: Commonly used in hospital settings for patients with severe or complicated infections, especially those involving multi-drug resistant bacteria.
· Biotechnology & Research: Utilized in research to study bacterial resistance and to develop new therapeutic strategies.
