Magnesium hydroxide is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula Mg(OH)₂. It is a white, crystalline solid that is poorly soluble in water. It occurs naturally as the mineral brucite.
Key Properties:

Primary Uses:

Laxative: Its osmotic effect draws water into the intestines to relieve constipation.
2. Industrial:
Flame Retardant & Smoke Suppressant: Used in plastics, cables, and construction materials. When heated, it decomposes endothermically (absorbs heat) and releases water vapor, diluting flammable gases.
Wastewater Treatment: Precipitates and removes heavy metals and adjusts pH due to its alkalinity.
Precursor to Magnesium Oxide: Calcined (heated) to produce MgO, a refractory material.
3. Food & Agriculture:
Food Additive (E528): Used as an acidity regulator and firming agent.
Agricultural Additive: Corrects soil acidity and provides magnesium, an essential plant nutrient.
