**Sulfamethizole (Sulfamethylthiadiazole)**  

**Definition:**  

Sulfamethizole, also known as Sulfamethylthiadiazole, is a sulfonamide antibiotic with the chemical formula C9H10N4O2S2 and a molecular weight of 270.33 g/mol. It appears as a white to light yellow crystalline powder and is stable under normal conditions.  

**Functions:**  

1. **Antibacterial Action:** Sulfamethizole competitively inhibits bacterial dihydropteroate synthase, blocking the synthesis of folic acid, which is essential for bacterial DNA production. This mechanism effectively reduces bacterial growth.  

2. **Broad-Spectrum Activity:** It is effective against a range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, making it suitable for treating various infections.
