What is Tazarotene?
Tazarotene is a prescription-only topical retinoid. Retinoids are compounds derived from Vitamin A. Tazarotene is a third-generation retinoid, designed to be more selective and targeted in its action, which can make it more effective but also potentially more irritating than some earlier retinoids.
It works primarily by affecting the growth and differentiation of skin cells (keratinocytes) and has anti-inflammatory properties.
Primary Medical Applications
Tazarotene is FDA-approved for the treatment of the following conditions:
1. Plaque Psoriasis
Use: It is used to treat stable plaque psoriasis, which is characterized by raised, red patches covered with a silvery white buildup of dead skin cells.
How it works: It normalizes the growth cycle of skin cells. In psoriasis, skin cells multiply too rapidly. Tazarotene slows this overproduction, reduces inflammation, and helps to smooth the psoriatic plaques.
2. Acne Vulgaris
3. Photoaging (Off-Label but Very Common Use)
Use: While not originally FDA-approved for this purpose, it is widely prescribed off-label to treat signs of sun-induced skin aging. This is often considered one of its most powerful applications.
How it works: It significantly improves the appearance of:
Fine lines and wrinkles: It stimulates collagen production, plumping the skin.
Mottled hyperpigmentation (sun spots): It accelerates skin cell turnover, helping to fade dark spots and even out skin tone.
Skin roughness and texture: It promotes exfoliation, leading to smoother skin.
