Description of Trimethylolpropane triacrylate
Trimethylolpropane Triacrylate (TMPTA, CAS: 15625-89-5) is a clear, viscous trifunctional acrylate monomer with the molecular formula C₁₅H₂₀O₆. Widely used as a reactive diluent and crosslinking agent in UV- and EB-curable systems, TMPTA significantly enhances curing speed, hardness, and chemical resistance of coatings, inks, adhesives, and 3D printing resins. Its three acrylate groups provide high reactivity, resulting in densely crosslinked networks with excellent abrasion resistance, gloss, and mechanical strength.
Application of Trimethylolpropane triacrylate
UV-Curable Coatings and Inks. TMPTA is widely used as a reactive diluent and crosslinking agent in UV-curable coatings for wood, plastics, metals, and paper. It provides fast curing, high gloss, excellent hardness, and superior abrasion and chemical resistance.
Printing Inks and Overprint Varnishes. As a trifunctional monomer, TMPTA enhances adhesion, flexibility, and durability in screen printing inks, flexographic inks, and overprint varnishes, delivering vibrant colors and protective finishes.
Adhesives and Sealants. TMPTA improves crosslinking density and mechanical strength in UV-curable adhesives and pressure-sensitive adhesives, suitable for laminating, bonding electronics, and optical applications.
3D Printing and Photopolymers. It serves as a key component in stereolithography (SLA) and digital light processing (DLP) resins, offering rapid curing, high resolution, and robust mechanical properties for prototyping and manufacturing.
Dental and Medical Composites. TMPTA is incorporated into dental restoratives and biomedical materials, providing biocompatibility, low shrinkage, and excellent wear resistance in UV-cured formulations.
Storage of Trimethylolpropane triacrylate
It should be kept in a cool, well-ventilated area away from heat, sparks, open flames, and direct sunlight to prevent premature polymerization. Keep containers tightly closed in a dark place at temperatures below 30°C, ideally 10–25°C. Use original or approved containers with inhibitors intact. Protect from strong oxidizers, peroxides, and radical initiators. Refrigeration extends shelf life, but avoid freezing. Handle with care due to skin sensitization and irritation risks.
