VPS54 is a key component of the GARP (Golgi-associated Retrograde Protein) complex, which mediates retrograde transport of endosomal vesicles to the trans-Golgi network, ensuring proper sorting and recycling of proteins and lipids. This process is critical for maintaining cellular homeostasis, organelle structure, and secretory pathways. Mutations in the VPS54 gene are linked to neurodegenerative disorders, such as progressive motor neuronopathy in mice (wobbler mice), highlighting its role in neuronal health.
