The oxytocin receptor (OTR) is a G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) that mediates the effects of oxytocin, a neuropeptide involved in social bonding, childbirth, lactation, and emotional regulation. OTR antibodies are essential tools for studying the distribution, expression, and function of these receptors in tissues and cell models. They are widely used in techniques like immunohistochemistry (IHC), western blotting, and immunofluorescence to visualize OTR localization in the brain, uterus, mammary glands, and other organs.

Research on OTR antibodies has advanced understanding of oxytocin's role in behaviors (e.g., maternal care, trust) and pathologies, including autism spectrum disorders, anxiety, and metastatic cancers. Commercially available OTR antibodies vary in specificity, often targeting extracellular or intracellular receptor domains. However, cross-reactivity with vasopressin receptors (structurally similar to OTR) remains a validation challenge, emphasizing the need for rigorous controls.

Recent studies also explore OTR's therapeutic potential, such as in managing social dysfunction or enhancing drug delivery in cancer. Species reactivity (human, rodent, etc.) and tissue-specific isoforms further complicate antibody selection. Despite these challenges, well-validated OTR antibodies remain critical for unraveling oxytocin-mediated pathways and their translational applications in neuroscience, endocrinology, and oncology.
