Polymyxin B nonapeptide is a cationic cyclic peptide composed of nine amino acids, containing five Dab residues, with its primary functional group being the amino group. It is a polypeptide derived from the antibiotic polymyxin B. Polymyxin B nonapeptide interacts with the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria, thereby increasing membrane permeability through the promotion of hydrophobic diffusion. With lower toxicity and lacking bactericidal activity, it retains the ability to sensitize Gram-negative bacteria to several antibiotics by permeabilizing their outer membrane. Polymyxin B nonapeptide is obtained from polymyxin B through proteolytic removal of its terminal aminoacyl residues, resulting in a cyclic peptide.
