体外研究GastricmucinmaybeintegrallyinvolvedinthemechanismofgastricmucosalinjurycausedbyHelicobacterpylorileadingtogastritis,pepticulceration,andpossiblygastriccancer.Gastricmucinsareclassifiedintotwotypesbasedontheirhistochemicalproperties.Thefirstisasurfacemucouscell-typemucin,secretedfromthesurfacemucouscells.Thesecondisfoundindeeperportionsofthemucosaandissecretedbyglandmucouscells,includingmucousneckcells,cardiacglandcells,andpyloricglandcells.TheuniqueO-glycansingastricmucinappearstofunctionasanaturalantibiotic,protectingthehostfromH.pyloriinfection.Gastricmucinmayprovideprotectiontothesurfaceepitheliumgastrointestinaltractbyscavengingoxidantsproducedwithinthelumen;however,itdoessoattheexpenseofitsviscoelasticproperties.Bothnativeandpronase-treatedmucineffectivelyscavengehydroxylradicalandthatthescavengingpropertiesarenotsignificantlydifferent.Theeffectiveconcentrationofmucinrequiredfora50%reductioninmalondialdehydeproductionis10mg/mLforbothnativeandpronase-treatedmucin.
