Can methyl thioglycolate be added to hair dye? Is it safe?

Mar 9,2026

Yes. Methyl Thioglycolate is a thioglycolate compound, considered an ester of methanol and thioglycolic acid. This substance can be used in hair styling products such as straighteners, perms, hair conditioners, styling products, and hair dyes and colorants. The expert panel speculates that other esters may have similar patterns of skin and eye irritation and skin sensitization as Glyceryl Thioglycolate, and recommends that if these esters are used, the concentration should be limited and hairdressers should be advised to avoid skin contact. The CIR expert panel's safety assessment concluded that a concentration not exceeding 15.2% (based on thioglycolic acid) is safe. Furthermore, thioglycolates are generally considered to be non-genotoxic and pose no carcinogenic risk.
