How hygroscopic is ethylene glycol? What are its main uses?

Mar 30,2026

Ethylene glycol has a strong hygroscopic propertie and can be mixed with water in any proportion, making it a commonly used antifreeze and coolant. Ethylene glycol is primarily used in the manufacture of PET plastic resin used to make beverage containers for soda, water and juice, and polyester fiber for clothes, upholstery, carpet and pillows. Acute (short-term) exposure of humans to ethylene glycol by ingesting large quantities causes three stages of health effects: central nervous system (CNS) depression, followed by cardiopulmonary effects, and later renal damage.
