Is azithromycin an anti-inflammatory drug?
No. Azithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic indicated for the treatment of mild to moderate infections caused by specific susceptible strains. Examples include acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis caused by Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis or Streptococcus pneumoniae; community-acquired pneumonia caused by Chlamydia pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Mycoplasma pneumoniae or Streptococcus pneumoniae; acute otitis media and bacterial sinusitis caused by Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis or Streptococcus pneumoniae; pharyngitis/tonsillitis caused by Streptococcus pyogenes; Uncomplicated skin and skin structure infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes or Streptococcus agalactiae; urethritis and cervicitis caused by Chlamydia trachomatis or Neisseria gonorrhoeae, etc. It is similar to amoxicillin, cephalosporins and fluoroquinolones in that they are all antibiotics. Drugs such as ibuprofen, aspirin and Fenbid, on the other hand, are anti-inflammatory medicines.
