Is hexamethylphosphoramide carcinogenic?
Apr 21,2026
Yes. Hexamethylphosphoramide is a colourless, transparent liquid with an aromatic odour; when heated to the point of decomposition, it releases toxic fumes of phosphorus oxides and nitrogen oxides. It is used as a thermal stabiliser for polystyrene and as a solvent in research laboratories. Exposure to this substance can cause irritation to the eyes, skin and respiratory tract. Based on evidence of carcinogenicity in experimental animals, there are sufficient grounds to believe that hexamethylphosphoramide is a human carcinogen.
