Is Indometacin an anti-inflammatory drug? What are its side effects?
Apr 17,2026
Indometacin is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that exhibits antipyretic and analgesic properties. It is a potent inhibitor of prostaglandin synthesis in vitro. Adverse effects and reactions, which occur in up to 60% of patients, are closely related to indometacin's strong anti-inflammatory potency. Gastric irritation, including ulcers, bleeding, and perforation, predominates. Nervous system complications are related to cerebral edema. Headache is common. Hematological effects are infrequently reported. Nephrotoxicity is exacerbated by pre-existing renal impairment. Ocular toxicity can follow long-term use.
