Is it safe to use tianeptine as a dietary supplement?
Apr 22,2026
No. Tianeptine is a drug approved in several countries for the treatment of major depressive disorder, but it has not yet been authorised for medical use in the United States. Nevertheless, it is widely abused as an unregulated dietary supplement, commonly known as ‘petrol station heroin’, ‘ZaZa’ and ‘Tianna Red’. Tianeptine is an atypical antidepressant and is considered a potent μ-opioid receptor agonist. However, the drug carries a risk of physical dependence and severe withdrawal symptoms. Most importantly, there have been reports that it may exacerbate depressive symptoms and be associated with suicidal ideation.
