Is zinc chloride a catalyst?

Apr 22,2026

Yes. Zinc chloride (ZnCl2) is an effective catalyst for the selective synthesis of 2-furanmethanol from lignocellulosic biomass. It can be used to catalyse the synthesis of 2-furanmethanol from the leaves of Acacia auriculiformis. Furthermore, ZnCl₂ is also used in cells and electrolytes. ZnCl₂ cells are typically manufactured using synthetic manganese dioxide and have a higher capacity than the Leclanche cell.
