Traditional Preparation Methods of Magnesium Citrate

Mar 9,2026

Magnesium citrate is an important organomagnesium compound, usually a white granular or crystalline powder, readily soluble in dilute acids, slightly soluble in water and ethanol, odorless, slightly salty, and possessing good chemical stability and biocompatibility. It is a salt formed by the combination of citric acid and magnesium ions. Based on the content of water of crystallization, magnesium citrate can be divided into two common forms: anhydrous magnesium citrate and nonahydrate magnesium citrate.

Traditional Preparation Methods of Magnesium Citrate

Currently, due to its simplicity, low cost, and lack of pollution, the traditional neutralization method for magnesium citrate is widely used in large-scale industrial production.

This method uses edible citric acid, magnesium carbonate, or magnesium oxide as the core raw materials and requires no catalyst. The finished product is obtained through neutralization reaction, concentration, dehydration, and drying. The process flow is clear, energy consumption is low, and it is suitable for large-scale production. The specific steps are as follows:

  • Raw Material Preparation: Food-grade or pharmaceutical-grade edible citric acid and magnesium carbonate (or magnesium oxide) are selected as raw materials. The purity of the raw materials must meet relevant standards, and impurities must be removed to avoid affecting the quality of the finished product. The ratio of citric acid to magnesium salt needs to be precisely controlled according to the stoichiometric ratio of the reaction. Preparation of Citric Acid Aqueous Solution: Add edible citric acid to an appropriate amount of deionized water and stir until completely dissolved to prepare a citric acid aqueous solution.

  • Neutralization Reaction: Place the prepared citric acid aqueous solution in a reaction vessel and slowly add magnesium carbonate or magnesium oxide, controlling the feed rate. Continuously stir to ensure the neutralization reaction proceeds completely, producing magnesium citrate precipitate and byproducts (magnesium carbonate reacts to produce carbon dioxide and water, while magnesium oxide reacts to produce water).

  • Material Concentration: Reheat the reaction system using the heat generated during the neutralization reaction to concentrate the magnesium citrate solution. Continuous stirring is required during concentration to prevent localized overheating that could lead to product deterioration or the formation of abnormal crystals.

  • Centrifugal Dehydration: Pour the concentrated magnesium citrate mixture into a mixer to ensure uniform dispersion of the precipitate. Then, place it in a centrifuge to remove excess water, obtaining moist magnesium citrate solid. The centrifuge speed needs to be adjusted according to the material characteristics to ensure thorough dehydration and reduce energy consumption for subsequent drying.

  • Drying: Place the dehydrated magnesium citrate solid in a drying oven to obtain a white crystalline powder of magnesium citrate product. After drying, the product must be cooled to room temperature to prevent moisture absorption from affecting its stability.

The main advantages of this method are its simplicity, lack of catalyst contamination, low cost, and low energy consumption, making it suitable for large-scale industrial production and meeting the needs of common food and pharmaceutical excipients. However, this method also has some drawbacks, such as a high rate of impurity co-crystallization during crystallization and difficulty in controlling crystal form, which may lead to batch-to-batch variations in product quality.

Magnesium citrate is a multifunctional organomagnesium compound that plays a vital role in the pharmaceutical, food, and daily chemical industries due to its excellent biocompatibility, high absorption rate, and wide range of applications. It is not only a high-quality magnesium supplement that effectively meets the body's magnesium requirements, maintaining the health of bones, muscles, the nervous system, and the cardiovascular system, but also offers a variety of other benefits.
