What are Aluminum chloride's applications? Is it harmful?

Aluminum chloride is a yellowish or grayish-white, crystallinepowder with a sharp odor. It is used as a chemical intermediate for Aluminum compounds, as a catalyst forcracking petroleum, in preserving wood, and in medications,disinfectants, cosmetics, photography and textiles. Anhydrous AlCl3 is strongly corrosive and releases hydrochloric acid in contact with water. Contact can severely irritate and burn the skin and eyes withpossible eye damage. Inhaling Aluminum chloride can irritate the nose and throatcausing coughing and wheezing.
