What are its industrial uses? Is it carcinogenic?

1,2-dibromoethane(EDB) is non-flammable, colourless liquid with a sweet odour. It is used in the production of other industrial chemical and pharmaceuticals. It was previously used as an additive in leaded petrol and as pesticide. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified 1,2-dibromoethane as probably having the ability to cause cancer in humans. It is toxic. Exposure causes irritation of the skin, mucus membranes, eyes, and upper respiratory tract. Animal tests indicate that overexposure may cause reproductive disorders. Chronic toxic effects include damage to the liver, kidneys, and lungs.
