What are Qualaquin (quinine sulfate)'s functions? Is it highly toxic?
Mar 31,2026
Qualaquin (quinine sulfate) is an antimalarial drug, it inhibits nucleic acid synthesis, protein synthesis, and glycolysis in Plasmodium falciparum and can bind with hemazoin in parasitized erythrocytes. In cases of high-dose poisoning, quinine has cardiotoxic effects, potentially causing arrhythmias that, in severe cases, can be fatal. Additionally, quinine is neurotoxic, which may lead to seizures, confusion, and, in extreme cases, permanent neurological damage.
