What are the applications and adverse effects of L(+)-Arginine?

Apr 7,2026

L(+)-Arginine is one of the most metabolically versatile amino acids. In addition to its role in the synthesis of nitric oxide, L(+)-Arginine serves as a precursor for the synthesis of polyamines, proline, glutamate, creatine, agmatine and urea. Most individuals get around 4–6g of L(+)-Arginine daily through their diet, thanks to consuming foods such as fish, chicken, soy protein like tofu and nuts. Research indicates that taking 9g of L(+)-Arginine supplements daily for several days or weeks is generally well tolerated, but the safety of taking high doses of it for more than three months is unknown. L(+)-Arginine is possibly safe for most people when taken short-term. It can cause some side effects such as stomach pain, bloating, diarrhea, and low blood pressure.
