What are the applications of Anthracene as an OLED material?

Anthracenes are widely used and easily synthesized emitters in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). They are processable both from solution or via vacuum deposition, and exhibit (deep-)blue emission with quantum yields (Φ) approaching unity. This is a prerequisite to achieving high external quantum efficiencies, as only 25 % of all excitons in devices based on conventional fluorophores can be harvested. For example, 9,10-diphenylanthracene (Φ=97 % in n-hexane and 68 % in thin-films) fluoresces in the deep blue regime. Stable deep blue emitters are one of the bottlenecks in OLED technology.
