Lidocaine is an antiarrhythmic medication of the class Ib type. This means it works by blocking sodium channels and thus decreasing the rate of contractions of the heart. Local neurons cannot signal the brain when it is used locally as a numbing agent. Side effects of lidocaine: • Swelling, itching, or rash that lasts 1-2 hours. • Your child’s skin may be numb up to 90 minutes Severe side effects: • Lightheaded, dizzy, or sleepy. • Nervous or confused. • Hearing a ringing noise. • Blurry vision. • Throwing up (vomiting) suddenly. • Feeling hot, cold, or numb all over. • Twitching or shaking. • Swelling, itching, or rash that lasts longer than 2 hours.
