What are the medicinal uses of Acetanilide? How toxic is it?
Apr 10,2026
Acetanilide is an amide. Flammable gases are formed by the reaction of organic amides with strong reducing agents. Acetanilide's effectiveness in relieving pain was discovered, and it was used as an alternative to aspirin for many years in treating such common complaints as headache, menstrual cramps, and rheumatism. Excessive or prolonged use engenders toxic side effects: it interferes with the function of hemoglobin, the oxygen-carrying pigment of the blood. Acute toxicity of acetanilide is low since the LD50 of oral exposure in rats is 1,959 mg/kg bw.
