What are the pharmacological effects and medical applications of chromium?
Mar 27,2026
Chromium is a trace element found in the human body that helps reduce oxidative stress and chronic inflammation. Research has shown that chromium supplementation has beneficial effects on obesity and hypertension, helping to reduce body weight as well as systolic and diastolic blood pressure in patients with these conditions. Furthermore, it serves as a key component in dental restoration materials (Co-Cr alloys). Most in vitro studies confirm that, compared to nickel (Ni) alloys, Co-Cr alloys exhibit good biocompatibility. In vivo findings indicate that Co-Cr alloys rarely cause sensitisation, irritation or allergic reactions. Such reactions are primarily observed in individuals with allergies to cobalt or chromium.
