What are the properties of Decane solvent? Is it harmful?
Decane is a colorless, volatile petroleum distillate that is relatively insoluble in water and is present as a minor component of gasoline. Because of its low water solubility and volatility, it would have a propensity to migrate to the atmosphere following an environmental release and would not pose a hazard to the food web. It is a flammable liquid that is used as a solvent in organic synthesis reactions, as well as in the manufacture of petroleum products, rubber, paper, and polyolefin manufacturing wastes. Human exposure may occur by dermal contact or inhalation. The mechanism of toxicity is most likely a nonspecific narcosis (similar to volatile anesthetic compounds). Decane is not mutagenic and there are no indications that it would be a carcinogen.
