What are the uses of tetrahydrofuran? Is it harmful to the human body?
Mar 11,2026
Tetrahydrofuran(THF) is a commonly used solvent, having the advantage that it is a relatively inert water-miscible ether. It is often used as a solvent in organometallic chemistry and it is particularly useful in the preparation of Grignard reagents from chlorobenzenes and vinyl chlorides. It reacts violently with oxidizing agents leading to fires and explosions. Subject to peroxidation in the air. THF can be detected at levels ∼25-fold lower than accepted occupational exposure limits. The primary human health concerns are irritation of the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract as well as transient central nervous system effects.
