What causes high 2-hydroxyisobutyric acid and is it toxicity?

2-hydroxyisobutyric acid is an organic acid metabolite of the gasoline additive methyl tertiary-butyl ether (MTBE) and a human xenobiotic metabolite. 2-hydroxyisobutyric acid have been shown to be to cause hepatic, kidney and central nervous system toxicity, peripheral neurotoxicity, and cancer in animals.
