In the field of medicine, sodium benzoate, as a key DAAO inhibitor, is capable of crossing the blood-brain barrier (BBB); in animal studies, it has been shown to increase glutathione (GSH) levels and exhibit antipsychotic-like activity. Research reports indicate that sodium benzoate may serve as an adjunctive therapy to improve the clinical and functional prognosis of patients with schizophrenia, including those with clozapine-resistant schizophrenia (CRS). As it promotes the clearance of ammonia via non-urea cycle pathways, it is also used in the treatment of patients with urea cycle disorders (UCD). Furthermore, it has been shown to improve cognitive function in patients with early-stage Alzheimer’s disease (without behavioural or psychological symptoms).
