What is Tert-butyl methyl ether (MTBE) 's use? Is it toxic?

Tert-butyl methyl ether (MTBE) is a colorless liquid with a distinctive anesthetic-like odor. It has applications as a non-polar solvent and is used as an anti-knocking agent and oxygenate in gasoline. MTBE can also be used to dissolve gallstones in patients for which surgical options are too risky. Tert-butyl methyl ether has an acute toxicity(oral, inhalation and dermal), it is a highly flammable liquid and vapour, it causes skin irritation.
