Methyl methacrylate (MMA) is the monomer used in the production of poly(methyl methacrylate), which has wide application in areas such as aviation and automobile components as well as various display devices. The conventional route to MMA is the acetocyanohydrin process. HCN is produced, for example, in the Andrussow oxidation process from CH4, NH3, and O2 or in the Degussa process (BMA) from CH4 and NH3 using platinum-based catalysts. HCN is then reacted with acetone to form ultimately MMA.
