What is the product of the catalytic dehydrochlorination of 2-chloropropane?
Apr 21,2026
In the presence of oxygen and a catalyst, 2-chloropropane (2-CP) undergoes primarily dehydrochlorination, converting to propylene and HCl. Catalysts include aluminium oxide, copper(II) chloride supported on aluminium oxide, manganese tungstate, mixed manganese-aluminium oxides, silica-alumina, and ZSM-5 zeolite, amongst others. However, other reactions such as oxychlorination to more heavily chlorinated compounds, cracking, oligomerisation and aromatisation may also occur. At low temperatures, 2-CP undergoes rapid and reversible molecular adsorption; however, from approximately 373 K, nucleophilic substitution reactions occur, yielding strongly adsorbed 2-propoxy species.
