Octadecylphosphonic acid exhibits different solubilities in different solvents: due to its long hydrophobic octadecyl chain, it has very low solubility in nonpolar solvents such as hexane and toluene; due to the polarity of the phosphonic acid group, it can form hydrogen bonds with solvent molecules, resulting in moderate solubility in polar organic solvents such as ethanol, methanol, and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO); under neutral conditions, it has very low solubility in water; while under alkaline conditions, its solubility in water can be slightly improved due to the deprotonation of the phosphonic acid group to form a more hydrophilic salt.
